- What occupations have you enjoyed all your life?
- Why
do/did you enjoy them?
- What
occupations have you not enjoyed? Why?
- How have your interests changed as you have grown and developed?
Initially, I thought “occupations,” consisted solely
of tasks with a financial gain but I’ve come to learn that it can be almost
anything an individual pursues no matter the monetary outcome. The most
prominent occupation I’m enjoying involves being a student. Looking back on my
life, I’ve enjoyed occupations that involve sports such as basketball and
soccer. Also, I’ve enjoyed occupations such cooking and being a mentor as well.
Most importantly, being a student
has increased my knowledge through training; ultimately, leading to jobs that
support myself and family. Also, being a student has increased my confidence
and vocabulary as well. I’ve enjoyed basketball because it provided an
opportunity to bond with my favorite brother and it was challenging because he
was 6’7”. Moreover, I still enjoy soccer because I’m always around diversity.
Soccer brings different cultures and different ethnic backgrounds together. I
love soccer because I get to give back to the Eddie Pope Urban Soccer League
which introduced me to the sport 22 years ago. Currently, I’m a soccer trainer
for local middle and high school athletes and those in the aforementioned
program; in addition, I referee games and serve as a “big brother” for the
program as well.
I didn’t enjoy my 1st
job where I cooked in a fast food restaurant because I constantly was burned by
hot grease from the fryer, shake mix spewed all over me, burns from the grill,
and always smelling like food.
When I consider sports and my participation, my interests
have changed. Previously, I would be the first to join a pickup basketball or
soccer game but knee surgery and others have influenced these changes. During
my undergraduate experience, I wanted to pursue business management and manage
a hotel or a nice restaurant. After working in several restaurants and noticing
such pressure in the kitchen and disrespect, its changed my interest.
