·      The role of occupation in the promotion of health and prevention of disease and disability
The importance of balancing areas of occupation for health and wellness.

Before starting Kindergarten, I remember having to get a lot of shots. Some other students were not allowed to start until their immunization record was up to date. I know from state to state it varies but North Carolina doesn’t allow those without the required immunizations to participate in school in the promotion of health and prevention of disease. Also in Kindergarten, we learned so many songs on washing hands and other techniques regarding hygiene/sanitation; such as, coughing in armpit. This aided in the promotion of health and prevention of disease. Later in elementary school, we had sex education program. In fifth grade, we watched a movie regarding safe sex and how it can lead to creating a child. The movie concluded with a woman giving birth and members of the programs started giving out condoms etc.

Moreover, in middle school, we were given our hepatitis shots (3 shots). Also, everyone in middle school had to take a series of health classes which talked about the promotion of health, the importance of balancing health and wellness, and the prevention of disease and disability. We were also taught CPR which aided in the promotion of health. In high school, there were more opportunities to maintain better fitness & health with multiple Health/PE classes (Parenting/child development; weightlifting I, II, III etc.). In addition, my school had a FFA program (Future Farmers of America) which promoted health and wellness and prevented disease as we talked about what we should use; also, those pesticides like DDT. We were also educated on CFC’s etc.

While working for Dish Network, we received so much training promoting health and prevention of disease and disability. We were taught how to distinguish between siding that we could drill through and things we couldn’t, such as, asbestos shingles (prevention of disease). From trainings and workshops, we knew that we had to wear dusk masks while drilling or while in the attic or crawlspace. While working on the roof, we had to wear fall protection which prevents someone from falling off; thus, aiding in the promotion of health and the prevention of a physical disability. Also at Dish Network, we would get sent out of market to rebuild after natural disasters (hurricanes, tornadoes, etc.) and we would have classes regarding the promotion of health and prevention of disability. The classes would make sure that we are wearing the proper PPE, avoiding downed power lines, etc.
